Another car share lane for Leeds

The new East Leeds Link Road is scheduled to open in December 2008 and includes lanes for vehicles carrying two or more occupants and heavy goods vehicles.

East Leeds Link will connect Leeds Inner Ring Road, at South Accommodation Road, with the M1 at Junction 45. This new route into the city centre includes lanes for high occupancy vehicles (HOVs) and heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). The lanes will operate at peak periods – inbound to the city from 7–10am and outbound towards the motorway network from 4–7pm.

The lanes can be used by:

  • cars or vans <7.5T with two or more occupants (including taxis and private hire vehicles with two or more occupants)
  • buses / coaches
  • pedal cycles / motorcycles
  • emergency vehicles
  • HGVs >7.5T

The new route will improve access to Aire Valley development sites, bringing new employment opportunities to the locality, and will also provide some traffic relief to the residential areas bordering the A64 and existing A63.

To encourage car sharing and maximise use of the lanes the City Council is promoting the car share matching database CarShareLeeds.com as part of the publicity about the scheme.
