Car Sharing Encouraged on M606

The first ever motorway lane for vehicles carrying 2 or more people will soon be opened on the M606/M62 junction.

Work is well underway on the first High Occupancy Vehicle Lane on an English Motorway. Sited at the junction of the M606 and M62, when completed the lane will save up to 8 minutes on the journey between Bradford and Leeds at peak times.

When opened, the lane can be used by:

  • cars with two or more people in them,
  • coaches and buses
  • minibuses and taxis when carrying passengers and motorcycles.

Currently 16% of vehicles using the junction would be eligible to use the new lane and it is expected that this proportion will grow considerably once it is open.

To raise awareness of the new lane, the Highways Agency has actively promoted www.wycarshare.com and has worked in partnership with the Northern Way and the West Yorkshire Travel Plan Network. The Highways Agency hopes that the lane will prove to be a valuable addition to the motorway network and pave the way for many more innovative developments in the future.

The diagram below provides more detail on the layout and positioning of the new lane.
